The Volkswagen ID.3, Tesla Model 3 and Audi E-tron have all been chosen as Electric Car of the Year. They are each winner in a separate category in the annual election organized by the Vereniging Zakelijk Rijders, in collaboration with Eneco eMobility, LeasePlan and AutoWeek.

Previous editions of this election only had one winner, but because the range of electric cars has grown so much in 2020, the jury decided that it would be fairer to make three categories. Everyone will understand that an electric Renault Twingo and a Porsche Taycan are difficult to put in one box. And in the future more categories will arise, because those who regularly read AutoWeek will see that the range is expanded almost weekly with a new model.

No less than 23 brands, 32 models with 52 different versions were assessed on the basis of nine criteria. It is an election in which all electric cars that were on the market in 2020 participate. So not only newcomers such as the Peugeot e-208, Mazda MX-30 and Honda E, but also veterans such as the Tesla Model S and Nissan Leaf are on the jury's longlist.

Stoneware

The Volkswagen ID3 has only been on the market since September, but almost 11,000 copies have already been registered. The driving characteristics score an 8 and combined with a WLTP range of 424 kilometers, the ID.3 is the winner in its class and scored the highest number of points of all cars. The Tesla Model 3 also won the title last year and shows that the model is still rock solid. An impressive range combined with the highest charging speed and no less than 9 out of 10 points for driving characteristics confirm this. The Audi E-tron is the winner in the top segment on the basis of the range, good sales numbers and 1,800 kilos towing weight.

Assessment criteria

Range, loading speed, availability, sales numbers, towing weight, price, ease of use, driving characteristics and lease rate are the components that count in this election. The data of the nine criteria were then given a weighting by the jury. For example, the driving characteristics weigh more heavily in the judgment than the towing weight.
